Chinese palaeobotanist, Jen Hsü (徐仁--Xu Ren, 1910–1992) considered himself to be an orthodox palaeobotanist largely because of his strong education background and solid scientific training.
Jen Hsü was born in Dang-tu county, Anhui Province, eastern China in 1910. When he was about 5 years old, he was sent to an elementary school sponsored by American church in Wuhu city of Anhui, close to Dang-tu county. The school was Americanized and taught mainly in English.
Hsü completed his undergraduate study in the Department of Biology of the Tsinghua University from 1929 to 1933. Then, he began to build his career in the Department of Biology of the Peking University. Hsü obtained solid training of plant morphology and anatomy under the direction of Ching–Yue Chang (张景钺,1895--1975).

From 1922 to 1925 Ching–Yue Chang once conducted his graduate study with Charles Joseph Chamberlain(1863--1943) in the Botany Department of Chicago University.

It is Ching–Yue Chang who suggested that Jen Hsü might be engaged in palaeobotany. Since 1944 Hsü spent 3 years in the Department of Botany of the Lucknow University in India studying palaeobotany with Birbal Sahni (1891--1949). Birbal Sahni was one of students of British great palaeobotanist, Sir Albert Charles Seward (FRS, 1863-1941). Birbal Sahni was the 5th Indian to become an FRS in 1936.

In 1952 Jen Hsü returned to China from India. After he worked in Nanjing for about 2 years he moved to Beijing. During the early years of the Cultural Revolution Jen Hsü was condemned because of so-called pride for an orthodox palaeobotanist. His dignity and respect was damaged in some ways.
