古植物学的故事（51）：
流行亦经典、经典亦流行---浅谈130年以来有关古植物学的英文教学参考书

古植物学属于传统学科，历史悠久。100多年来，各国学者对古植物学教科书不断推陈出新，一方面及时总结了古植物学这门学科在不同历史时期的最新发现和最新研究成果，另一方面也记录了人类探索植物起源与进化的历史过程。关于古植物学教科书的发展历史有很多有趣的故事，不乏名家与名作，某一地区、某一时期往往流行某种古植物学教科书，可谓是：流行亦经典、经典亦流行！
到目前为止，世界上究竟出版过多少种古植物学教科书？我们尚无精确统计。根据已有的资料，1887年Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach (1836—1914)编写了德国第一本德文古植物学教科书Palaeophytologie。后来，Henry Potonié (1857–1913)、Walther Gothan（1879--1954）、Max Hirmer (1893—1981)和Karl Magdefrau (1907—1991) 等学者都编写过各自的德文古植物学教科书。前苏联出版有俄文古植物学教科书，其中，A. H. 克里什托弗维奇（Afrikan Nikolaevich Krishtofovich, 1885--1953）的《古植物学》教科书共出版4次，其中文译本于1965年在中国出版。
本期《古植物学的故事》着重介绍一个多世纪以来古植物学领域的英文教科书及其参考书目。我初步整理了一个清单（见附件），为古植物学、现代植物学、地层古生物学、生态学和科学史等领域的专家及青年学生从事教学科研作参考。这些英文古植物学教学参考书主要是由英国和美国著名古植物学家编写的。
（一）英国学者编著的古植物学流行教科书
英国著名古植物学大师Albert Charles Seward (1863--1941)出版过几本英文古植物学教科书，流传甚广，影响极大，它们是：
（1898—1919年）Fossil Plants for Students of Botany and Geology (4 Volumes) [by Seward A.C., Vol.1 (1898), Vol.2 (1910), Vol.3 (1917), and Vol.4 (1919); reprinted 1963]
（1931年）Plant Life through the Ages (by Seward A. C., the first edition; the second edition, 1933; reprinted 1959)
Albert Charles Seward的学生--- John Walton （1895---1971）于1940年出版了一本很重要的古植物学教科书：
（1940年）An Introduction to the Study of Fossil Plants (by John Walton, the first edition; the second edition, 1953)
（二）美国学者编著的古植物学流行教科书
与欧洲相比，美国古植物学的发展历史较短。自19世纪中叶开始，美国古植物学不断取得较快的发展。80年来美国学者已出版数种古植物学教科书。1939年哈佛大学古植物学家William C. Darrah （1909---1989）出版两本古植物学教科书，其中一本为：
（1939年）Principles of Palaeobotany (by William C. Darrah)
根据我的考证，中国著名古植物学家徐仁先生（1910---1992）曾经学习过Darrah的著作。中国另一位非常著名的古植物学家李星学先生（1917---）也学习过这本教程。1945年，李星学先生在《地质论评》杂志撰文介绍这本古植物学教程。
1947年美国University of Michigan的著名古植物学家Chester A. Arnold（1901---1977）出版了他的教科书：
1981年美国古植物学家T. N. Taylor（现为美国科学院院士）出版了他的第一本教科书：
(1981年) Paleobotany: an introduction to fossil plant biology (by T. N. Taylor)
这本教科书的名字与内容都很好。我认为，这本教科书的成功在于它为当代古植物学的发展指出了崭新的方向，即古植物学历史的发展潮流将不断走进化石植物生物学的广阔天地。植物生物学是化石植物研究的灵魂和内涵。从这一点看，古植物学才有资格属于真正的古生物学，而不是古“死”物学！我理解，这种学术思想代表了世界古植物学的前进方向，是该书流行并成为经典的内在原因和动力。1992年，该书中文版《古植物学-- 化石植物生物学导论》在中国正式出版。这个中文版的文字及图版都存在印刷质量欠佳之问题，读起来很不爽，但它是我涉猎古植物学的入门教材，我感到十分庆幸。阅读英文原著确实很爽，那是后来的事情。
正当T. N. Taylor1981年的教科书之中文版千呼万唤才于1992年在中国出版不久，1年之后----也就是1993年T. N. Taylor与他的同事加夫人E. L. Taylor合作推出了他们的新作：

1993年出版的这本英文古植物学教科书在1981年出版的教科书基础上作很大改进，将书名改为“化石植物演化生物学”，从而突出和强调化石植物研究的演化意义。这本教科书在学术界一直保持着流行的态势。
近20年来，世界古植物学的发展取得了许多进步。面对新发现、新材料、新方法和新成就，T. N. Taylor教授与两位同事合作于2008年成功推出1993年版教科书的第二版。这是一本经过30多年精心打造而不断完善的英文版古植物学教科书，它很厚重、很精致，值得我们学习学习再学习。该书基本信息如下：

（三）加拿大学者编著的古植物学流行教科书
1983年加拿大University of Alberta古植物学家Wilson N. Stewart (1918--2004)编写了一个很好的古植物学教科书，很受学界欢迎：

1993年Wilson N. Stewart教授与美国古植物学家Gar W. Rothwell（Ohio University）将上面的教科书更新，推出第二版。这本教科书是学术界较为流行的英文古植物学教科书之一。

（四）其他教学参考书
古植物学的英文教学参考书很多。有些参考书是高水平的研究专著，构成某一研究领域的基石，也具有很高的史学研究价值。例如，1995年Paul C. Lyons等人编写了《20世纪早期北美石炭纪古植物学的历史透视》（Historical Perspective of Early Twentieth Century Carboniferous Paleobotany in North America ）。这是一本难得的好书，叫人爱不释手。
1999年T. P. Jones和N. P. Rowe组织众多专家编写了一本很实用的古植物学工具书----Fossil Plants and Spores: Modern Techniques。这本书的中文版已面世。2005年英国同仁组织有关专家编写了一本很有趣的书：History of Palaeobotany: Selected Essays，该书由伦敦地质学会出版。这本书专述古植物学的历史，充满人文关怀，可读性很强，颇受青睐。
优秀的古植物学教学参考书一般都具有较高的学术权威性，好像是古植物学教学与研究中的Bible，对推进现代古植物学的发展具有历史意义。人类的好奇心和探索欲望是无止境的，人类探索自然历史的过程是无止境的，古植物学研究肯定是没有尽头的。随着我们对植物演化与环境变迁的研究不断加深，我们的研究领域将不断扩大，我们的研究成果会越来越多，但是我们所面临的困难和无知也将不断增多。我认为，古植物学的未来发展呼唤更加优秀的教科书与参考书：没有最好，只有更好！
