Illustrate how to prepare 2 N HCl solution from concentrated

Number of gram equivalents of solute present in one liter of solution is called normality of solution.

Number of gm. equivalents of solute = W/E =weight of solute/Equivalent weight of solute.

HCl

concentrated HCl : usually 36,5 % = 36.5 g in 100 ml

MW of HCl = 36.5 (exact value36.48), Equivalent weight = 1 ( H+ , Cl- )

Number of gm. equivalents of solute = 36.5/1 = 36.5

So 36.5 G of HCl in 1 Litre of solution is 1N HCl (ie: 1M HCl)

for 2N HCl ,73 G of HCl is required.

Note : strength of concentrated HCl : usually 36,5 % = 36.5 g in 100 ml : 73 g in 200 ml

2N HCl = 73 g of HCl in 1000 ml

So 200 ml of concentrated HCl is diluted to 1000 ml with water to make 2N HCl.

This solution is stable at room temperature. Caution: This solution should be prepared under a hood with the HCl slowly being added to the deionized water.
