The evolution of an immigrant's political philosophy

(For new reader and those who request 好友请求, pleaseread my 公告 first)

When an immigrant arrives in his/her new country, typically the first order of business is to survive and possibly prosper.  For me this period is from 1950 to 1965 when I finished study, started to work and my career, and received tenure. If you succeed in this land of opportunity, you are grateful and believe in the maxim: if you work hard, you can succeed; if I can do it, then everybody should be able to do it - a very Republican and conservative philosophy. Furthermore, during the 50s and 60s, Republicans are more friendly to the ROC On Taiwan and have nothing to do with PRC on mainland China. Refugees and most CAs thus have naturally affinity to the Republican Party.

However, as time goes on, immigrants begin to feel more American and less attachment to the old country. One also begins to realize that even in the land of opportunity, not everyone is endowed with equal talent and ability (see privilege walk, http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-1565-795599.html ). It is the government and the more successful individual's DUTY to help those who are less fortunate - a Democratic Party and more liberal political view. Beyond public works and collective security, Governments are still needed to do and accomplish things that cannot be done via private individuals and organizations.

Thus, in the late 60s and during the last quarter of the 20th century, my view about government and politics became more liberal and less conservative. Reagan was the last Republican president I voted for. At the state and local level, party position and loyalty are less dominant and one tends to vote for ability and talent rather than party designation. Even in heavily democratic state such as Massachusetts, we often have Republican governor and state wide officers. You might say this is meritocracy with a socialism component. It is my own reverent hope that the entire world is gradually converging on such a model; the US or the Beijing model are merely different approaches to the same end.
