The Zigen Charitable fund 滋根基金会is a 20 year old nonprofit organization started by the oversea Chinese in the US devoted to helping poor people in remote areas of China, e.g., minority children in 貴州 and 雲南. It micro-funds projects ranging from $200 to $10,000 in basic education, small loans to women for economic development, health care, etc.  Its operating principle is people-to-people assistance, mutual  respect and understanding. In twenty years it has help educate over 5000 children who otherwise would not have been educated.

The Boston chapter of Zigen runs an annual fund raiser. This year it was an afternoon benefit concert featuring two well known Chinese vocal artists, 楊光 (戲劇花腔女中音) and 李玉新 (男高音) who sang a  mixture of well known Chinese and western arias.  In particular, the song 我愛你,中国 brought audience to tears and on their feet for a standing ovation. And by popular request, she sang it again as a encore.  All in all, it was  a most entertaining afternoon.

Note1: Both楊光 and李玉新are graduates of Central Conservatory of Music  (北京中央音樂学院)in Beijing China. 

Note2: Proceeds from this year’s concert will also benefit victims of the Chinese snow emergency.
