China Rules

New York Times this past Sunday had a full section (20 full pages in small prints) devoted to the title of this blog. Since NYT is blocked in China even though this section is rather complimentary about China, don’t Chinese want to read a media blocked by your government that actually says nice things about your country?

Here is first the introductory paragraph of the section:

Then West was certain China would fail. Government controlled economies stifle growth. Oppression smothers innovation. The Internet is an untamable force. A new middle class will demand a vote. None of these proved true. China is a superpower and it may soon surpass the US. This is the story of how it got there.

Next are the titles of the separate subsection and (my one sentence summary)

1.  Growth of a Global Power (China became no.2 by defying no.1)

2.  Unspoken Bargain (The government will improve your life and make you rich but don’t oppose the party)

3.  Regaining Status (Erasing the humiliations of the last 150 years)

4.  A More Hostile Era (The growing competition between China and the US)

5.  At a Crossroads (Trade war and Debt may be risks for the Chinese Economy)

Many facts reported of the China ascendency are probably well known to people in China. I don’t need to repeat them here. But here are some less known facts and titbits:

·       China financed a large number of best selling Hollywood movies in the last four years.

·       The best selling TV in the world are made in China with Chinese parts.

·       An 18 year old poor Chinese has 16 times more chance for upward social mobility than the same poor American. The American Dream is being replaced by the Chinese Dream.

·       China is building projects all over the world with money and muscle power.

·       Alibaba and Ten cents are no.4 and 5 in the world’s most valued Internet companies.

·       China leads the world in homeownership and by some account in number of billionaires.

Those of you in China know how to jump the blocking firewall should try to read this section of the New York Times or the Government should unblock this section of the NYT. EVERY Chinese including government officials/leaders will be proud and happy to read this.
