Before we bought a house, we lived in an apartment building during and after finishing school. We owned one car and I either walked to or take public transportation to work. In 1966 we moved to Lexington (some 11+ miles from Harvard where I worked). This is a suburban country town with little public transportation. Driving to work becomes a necessity. Thus, like millions of other middle class Americans, we bought a second car so that my wife and kids can get around during the day while I have the first car at work. 52 years later when I took our current second car (a 12 year old truck) for its annual inspection, the body was so rusted and old that it won’t pass inspection. Repair will be very expansive. This plus the fact we only drove the second car for less than 3000 miles last year made us decide to stop having a second car and cancel the registration and insurance. I suppose that if God willing and we live long enough, even one car will not be needed since we’ll be too old to drive. Life goes in circles!!
