A U.S. Ph.D vs a Tsinghua (CFINS) Ph.D



Six years ago, a group of us started CFINS at the invitation of Tsinghua University  (see my blog article http://sciencenet.cn/blog/user_content.aspx?id=8897)  with the idea to improve the graduate status and standings of Chinese 

universities in the world. An unstated but understandable goal is to make

a Ph.D degree from CFINS as desirable and reputable as  a Ph.D degree 

from a world class university, say MIT or Berkeley. Starting from scratch,

we are now six years into the process and have graduated two ph.ds, it is 

worthwhile to make an interim assessment. The opinion below are my own

 gathered from talking to students and others and thus should not be taken as official.

To start, we make some assumptions about current Chinese graduate ph.d students. We assume at most 1/3 of them will choose academia and research at a university as their life endeavor; the other 2/3 will do either industrial research and administration or regard a ph.d degree as a stepping stone to greater economic comfort. This division actually is pretty much the world average. On the other hand, whenever possible, we also assume the Chinese students  we are discussing here want to get a degree from a first rate university and not just any ph.d degree. 

Let us now see what are the considerations entering the mind of a Chinese student about to choose  graduate study towards the ph.d degree.

1. In order to enhance their chance to get full financial support at a good US University, the Chinese student typically spends two years to get a master degree in China first before applying for admission to US. This makes them competitively more attractive. The cost of this is two year of time since they generally must start from scratch once they get to the US.  The master degree does also give them a competitive advantage in adapting to US courses and language. This also increase their chance of success in the US system

2. On the other hand, if one elects to apply for admission to CFINS Tsinghua, our oversea professorial team members are all committed to give the student the same education and supervision attention as we give to our own US students (see my series of 8 blog article on academic research and education,  http://sciencenet.cn/blog/何毓琦.htm

 in particular article #5 in the series http://sciencenet.cn/blog/user_content.aspx?id=2950). In other words, you will be receiving the same education, training, and attention that we sincerely believe equal to the best of the US universities. Since you apply directly while you are still an undergraduate, you are a 直 博 生. You save two years of time compare to students in #1 above.

3. In the US, a fully supported student gets about $1500.00 per months for living expenses (Note added March 20,2010 For 2010-2011 the figure is now~$2300). While this is  a figure calculated based on minimal  but

 adequate life style of native born US students, Chinese students can usually  save from this some $200 per months. Over a period of 5 years this amounts to $12,000 which is not an inconsiderable sum. Even if you are fully supported at a Chinese University like Tsinghua, such saving is not possible. Thus there is a distinct financial advantage for going to the US which for most students easily cancels out the time advantage of #2 above

4. The time advantage in #2 above however comes into full play if your goal is an academic career in China. Given the same attention in supervision, a CFINS ph.d student is given access and opportunities to the entire scientific and academic exposure of the world as if they are in a world class university in the US. They can attend conferences abroad, are given firsthand knowledge of latest unpublished results of their field, spending part of their study abroad in the home institution of their professors, and be invited to give talks and visit famous centers of research, etc. I can honestly say that my first ph.d student from CFINS were able to take advantage of all these things. As a result he is well on his way to become a rising star in his field on a world wide basis. In the mean time, all his classmate who went to US for graduate studies are at least one year from completing their thesis and remain unknown. 

5. Balancing #4, it is nevertheless true that the fact a CFINS ph.d degree is as good as a ph.d degree from the best US universities is still a relatively unappreciated truth in China. Unless there is deep personal understanding and special situation, you must convince your potential employer of this truth.  This may not always be easy.

6. Besides, generally it is still月亮也是美国的好. A ph.d. degree from the US even from a second tier university is considered to be more valuable than a Chinese ph.d by the general public – the matter of 海龟 vs. 土鳖. Such very natural bias will take a long time to eliminate and cannot be erased over night. After all it takes百年樹人.

7. If the goal of a CFINS Chinese ph.d is nonacademic, then s/he of course still gets a jump on his/her US counterpart in career start and financial earning. How important is this advantage in China, I am not in a position to evaluate. Perhaps some readers of this blog can shed some light on this.

8. However, for the students studying in the US, there is one advantage that is understood by everybody but never spoken out loud. Statistics says that 75% of the Chinese students studying in the US choose to remain in the US after completion of study. This opportunity for a more comfortable and freer (from government AND family) life style is not available to one who stays in China for graduate study.  The long term consequences and subtle limitations of being a minority in a foreign land on the other hand cannot be easily appreciated by most young students when evaluating this option.

Thus, on balance from the viewpoint of a fourth year undergraduate senior considering going abroad vs. remain in China at CFINS Tsinghua, the advantages are still very much in favor of going abroad for the above reasons. And for these reasons while CFINS gets its share of good students, the country is not beating on our doors for admission. 

Moreover, the short term advantages of studying abroad are very obvious while the good consequences of a CFINS ph.d are more subtle and longer term. Young student and general public do not always appreciate such considerations. 

I say all the above not as complaints or excuses.  This is simple reality!
