表达“暴政、独裁”之类意思，有：despotic, 残暴的，该词含义清晰，完全是负面的；dictatorial，专政的、专制的，该词较中性；tyrannical; tyrannous, 该词一般只用于修辞场合，平时不大用；autocratic,独断的，该词最为中性，只描述个人说了算这一事实。

其反义词有：compliant,  conciliatory, democratic, lawful, representative.

表达“命运”之类意思，有：destiny,指将来面临的命运；fate,决定论意义上的宿命；fortune,幸运；lot, 生活中所处地位这样的命运。

其反义词有：choice,freedom, free will, will.

表达“破坏、毁坏”之类意思，有destroy; ruin,只言破坏之彻底，不一定言及破坏力；wreck,将什么打成碎片的冲动；demolish和raze，指拆除、干掉一些大东西，如建筑物；annihilate,将什么化为无；eradicate和uproot字面意思都是根除，其实前者只表示使什么完全消失；exterminate,extinguish和extirpate都表示有意识地去除，exterminate是大量消灭，extinguish是灭火，extirpate也是根除的意思。

表达“设计、构想”之类意思，有：devise,想出，中性词，强调试探性；contrive则是图谋，负面的意思；conceive,构想最初的概念；formulate,是devise的下一阶段，想法逐渐成形；invent,涉及整个过程。

“死”的各种表达：die;bite the dust,原指死于战场;kick the bucket,字面意思是（上吊者）“蹬掉桶”，所以表示死；die with one’s boots on,原指战死沙场,现表示殉职；expire,委婉的说法；perish,暴死；depart,指灵魂升天了；pass away, pass on, pass over,含义差不多；go to meet one’s Maker.
