    表达“严重、紧急”之类意思，有crucial，一般性的严重；acute，相当严重，向危机逼近了；critical，与中文千钧一发差不多了；pressing和urgent放一块说，前者可以指缓慢发展的紧迫情形，后者含义是：虽然紧急，但不一定是决定性因素，而只是起作用的一个因素。

表达“残酷的”之类含义，有cruel; sadistic, 有意识让人痛苦；brutal和bestial一块说，前者形容为达目的不择手段的人，后者指出于任何一种非正常的欲望而表现出的残酷；nasty，稍微温和些，nasty look是“凶相”。

其反义词有：gentle, humane, kind,merciful.

“喊叫”的各种表达：cry, shout和yell为一组，cry是不由自主的，shout尤指与气愤相关的叫嚷，yell特用于呼救; bellow与roar一块说，前者说声音深沉而响亮，后者常指群情激奋的声音；shriek和scream一块说，前者说声音比较尖利，后者也说尖利，但尤其暗指声音大；outcry常指人群因愤怒而发出的声音。

表达“破口”之类的意思，有：cut, 不管多大的口子，不管何种器械造成的口子，都可用这个词；incision, 用作外科术语；gash, 意外事故产生的又长又阔的伤口；slash, 长而深的口子，是长时间反复摆动所造成的；slit, 长而薄的口子。
