7.4 神力（Mana）和名称—发誓赌咒

Phyo是to bring forth的意思，多少类似于拉丁语的“自然”。

Nation: a people of the same birth

Cannibalism来自西班牙语的caribes，即carib的复数，carib指西印度群岛的一个有吃人习俗的部族。

Euxine意为“敌意的”，而该词所由来的axeinos本来是“非敌意”的意思，axeinos又是从axsoena(黑海)讹变而来。

Christ来自希腊语christos，意为annoited（技巧高超的）。

Jesus的意思是，Yahweh is deliverance.(耶和华即解救)

Zounds（表示愤怒惊讶的咒骂声），是God’s wounds!的意思，将God省略了。

法语中，如果不用diable（魔鬼）的话，可以说diantre.

第8章妇女和儿童在语言中的作用

8.2 婴儿、母亲和父亲的语言

从德语Amme（nurse）的词形，可看出与M的联系。该词来自拉丁语amo，意为“我爱”。

Pigeon来自拉丁语的pipio，也许是孩子模仿鸽子叫声的发音。

Matter是宇宙的mother-stuff，此处mater等于mother。

拉丁语Papparium意为半流质食物，希腊语的pappe是面团，英语paste源出于此。

Pope的本意是父亲。

The child is father to the man; and man is fatherto language.

(不好翻译。字面意思：孩子是成人之父，人是语言之父。“孩子是成人之父”与中文的“三岁看八十”意思接近。)
