3rd call for applications for postdoctoral research contracts

Agreement of the Research Committee on 25th February 2009

 

 

1. Objective

 

The aim of this call, within the framework of guidelines of the new academic career (Agreement 57/2006 of the UAB Council of Governors on 20^th December) is to award14 postdoctoral contracts for the temporary incorporation of researcher doctors in different Departments and research institutes of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

 

2. Eligibility

 

In order to be eligible for these contracts, applicants must fulfil the following requirements:

 

a) Hold a doctorate qualification obtained after 1 July 1998 from a university other than the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (the date of obtaining the qualification is understood as the date on which the thesis was presented and accepted), or after 1 July 1997 if, before the end of the acceptance period for the grant, it can be justified that after this date the candidate has been on maternity leave, caring for a child of less than 6 years of age or caring for a person with a physical, mental or sensorial disability, or for a person older than sixty-five who depend on the candidate and requirement special treatment.

 

b) Candidates who obtained their doctorate from the UAB in the periods indicated above are also eligible if they can show that they have spent a postdoctoral period at other universities or research centres for a minimum of two years at the time of incorporation.

     

c) Candidates who have not been contracted or received grants from the UAB in the two years immediately preceding this competition notice.

 

3. Period and duration

 

The duration of the grant is for one year renewable for one further year, not counting the interruptions mentioned in section 17 of this notice. Incorporation will take place during the first quarter of 2010 on the signing of an employment contract.

 

4. Amount and payment

 

The gross annual amount of the grant is €26,639. Payment is made in 14 instalments per year.

 

5. Rights of contracted researchers

a) To receive the amount corresponding to the contract in the form established in section 4 of this notice.

b) To obtain the necessary help and support from the University for carrying out the research task.

c) To enjoy all rights of intellectual and industrial property deriving from the research activity that corresponds to them, according to current legislation and regulations.

d) To use the services offered by the University and take part in the all its activities in accordance with the internal regulations of the UAB.

e) To enjoy all rights and social benefits that are available to the academic staff at the UAB.

f) To accept that they may be asked to participate in teaching tasks up to a total of 60 hours per academic year.

 

6. Obligations of contracted researchers

 

a) To apply, according to their nationality,  for the corresponding permission that allows an employment contract to be signed according to the terms established in the current legislation and the calendar indicated in section 3 of this competition notice.

b) To comply with the internal rules and regulations of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, as well as those of the department in which they are working.

c) To join the department or institute during the dates stated in section 3 of this notice.

d) To include a mention of their attachment to the UAB department or institute in any written materials.

 

7. Obligations of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

a) To sign a full time employment contract with the beneficiary, in accordance with current regulations for a maximum period of three years.

b) To provide the contracted researcher with the support and means necessary for carrying out their activity, and to guarantee that they receive the rights and services received by staff in the same or a similar category.

c) To detect and provide solutions to any possible incompatibilities.

 

8. Incompatibilities of the beneficiary

a) The status of the beneficiary under the terms of this programme is incompatible with any contractual or statutory link that may affect exclusivity of dedication. In cases where this incompatibility arises, the university will proceed to withdraw the contract. 

 

b) Earnings from teaching tasks (courses, conferences and papers) or research tasks (books or articles) that are directly associated with the research being carried out by the beneficiary are authorised as long as they are of an occaasional nature and not a regular source of income. Authorisation is given by the Vice Rector’s Office for Research.

 

9. Positions offered

 

Positions are offered in this call for the researchers listed in Appendix 1 and on the following website: http://www.uab.cat/bequesrecerca.

 

10. Applications and deadline

 

a) The period for submitting applications will be from 11 to 24  May 2009

b) Application forms will be available from the following website: http://www.uab.cat/bequesrecerca . All obligatory fields on the application form must be fully completed. Forms must be submitted digitally together with the following documents:

i) DNI or passport

ii) Curriculum vitae

iii) Doctorate certificate

iv)A statement giving the applicatns motivation and suitability for the position applied for.

v)Two letters of recommendation to be sent directly by the writers to the following postal address: Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Edifici Rectorat, Àrea de Gestió I Recerca, 08193, Bellaterra (Cerdanyola del Vallès). Writers of the letters of recommendation should also send an e-mail to incorporacio.movilitat@uab.cat stating that they have sent a letter of recommendation, the name of the applicant and the position applied for.

 

11. Selection and evaluation criteria

 

The selection of applicants is carried out by the departments and research institutes involved in accordance with the following criteria:

a) teaching experience

b) curriculum vitae

c) Benefit to the applicant’s academic and research career and for the research of the departments involved.

 

12. Governing body

 

The responsibility for awarding grants lies with the UAB Research Committee (Commissió d’Investigació) following evaluation and recommendation of the proposals by the departments and institutes offering positions.

 

13. Decision period

 

The final decision on the award of grants will be made public on Setember 2009.

The legal requirement for the announcement of the decision is six months counted from the day the application was presented. If this period expires and no decision has been announced, the application is deemed to be rejected.

 

14. Announcement of decision

The provisional and final lists will be forwarded to all applicants, using the e-mail address provided on the application form. The lists will also be published at hhtp://www.uab.es/bequesrecerca.

15. Acceptance

a) Once the final list has been published, those candidates who have been selected according to ranking will receive notification of the award by e-mail including the acceptance form.

b) Within a maximum period of 10 calendar days, starting on the day after the notification, the selected candidates must complete, sign and send the acceptance form together with the agreement to comply with all the general conditions pertaining to this award.

c) Selected candidates who do not return the acceptance form within the period indicated above will be deemed to have rejected the grant.

d) In the event that selected candidates have not been awarded a doctorate degree (PhD) at the time of submitting the application form and have not sent proof of having received the degree before 3 July 2009, they will be excluded form the final list and the next candidate on the list will be offered their post and so on.

 

16. Formalising the agreement

In order to formalise the agreement, beneficiaries must present the following documents to the Office of Academic and Research Staff of the UAB at least 7 days before the forecast start date in the department:

 

a) a copy of DNI or passport accompanied by NIE,

c) an attested copy of all the documentation requested in section 10 of this notice,

d) photocopy of the Spanish Social Security number (where this is not available, it should be requested from the General Treasurer's Office of the Social Security Department),

e)Spanish  bank account  details,

f) 2 passport-sized photographs,

g) in the case of non-EU community, the work permit that allows an employment agreement to be signed (international.welcome.point@uab.cat ).

 

17. Interruptions

a) Leave for maternity, adoption or pre-adoption periods or the permanent care of children less than six years old will be for the legally established periods for each of these cases.

 

b) In accordance with current legislation, the contract will be extended for the same period of time as it was suspended for the reasons detailed in the previous point.

 

18. Substitutions

 

Vacancies arising as a result of resignation from the post or other reasons among the contracted research staff may be filled by people on the reserve list within a period of three months of the date of incorporation of the person vacating the post.

 

The period between the start date and the incorporation of a substitute is not recoverable.

 

15. Appeals and objections

Within a period of ten calendar days counted from the day after the publication of the provisional list of selected candidates, those who wish to may present the appeals that they consider to be appropriate to the Research Management Office located on the ground floor of the Rectorat Building and addressed to the Vice Chancellor for Research..

 

In opposition to the decisions taken in response to the appeals presented, those who wish to do so may present a higher appeal to the Rectorat, within a maximum period of one month.

 

In accordance with the provisions of article 111 of Law 30/1992, of 26 September, on the legal systems of the public administration and common administrative procedure, the submission of an appeal against the agreement and decision of the competent bodies does not imply any obligatory suspension of the actions that are subject to the appeal being from carried out.

 

16. Data protection

All data provided by candidates will be added to the database of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona for the purpose of managing the selection process.

 

In accordance with the provision of Organic Law 15/1999, of 13 December, for the protection of personal data, those who wish to do so may exercise their right to access, rectify or cancel their details before the Secretary General of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
