博客教学（4）："老" 与 "小"如何翻译？

   美国犹他大学"小"卡利斯特教授（William D. Callister, Jr.）写了两本世界著名的材料科学教材：《Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering（材料科学与工程基础）》和《Materials Science and Engineering-An Introduction（材料科学与工程介绍）》。前者由化学工业出版社引进，出版英文影印版（见图1），在我国作为材料科学专业双语教学教材使用有十多年历史了；后者是他与David G. Rethwisch合作撰写，在德国、澳大利亚等西方国家普遍使用。去年一位澳大利亚朋友来访，送我一本最新版（图2，3）。

   注意到，作者William D. Callister后加“ Jr.”，这是什么意思？

   这里，"Jr".为Junior的缩写，意为“小的”；与此相对，如果名字后面加"Sr".，这是Senior的缩写，意为“老的”。

   史上最有名的莫过于美国总统老布什(Gorge Bush Sr.)，全名为George Herbert Walker Bush和小布什（Gorge Bush Jr.），全名为George Walker Bush。

   因此，我们不应该根据中文习俗，把小布什翻译为Young Bush，老布什翻译为Old Bush。
